Hello, my name is Michael Hickman. I was born in Yorkshire, England, where my late sister first introduced me to the spirit of adventure. In my teenage years, I took up cycle touring, exploring the landscapes of Yorkshire. Today, I live and work in Thailand, and cycling remains a significant part of my life. There’s nothing I love more than discovering new places, whether close to home or further afield—there’s always something fascinating waiting to be explored.
Lumpini Park, one of Bangkok’s most beautiful green spaces, served as the inspiration for my novel, Lumpini Park. The park is also home to some unique wildlife, lounging by its many artificial lakes, all nestled in the heart of a bustling metropolis. I have always been drawn to Thailand’s ornate temple complexes and preserved old villages, where history lingers in every corner. Bangkok and its surrounding provinces are rich with these cultural treasures. Often, I find myself scribbling notes about what I see, hear, and experience—sometimes even what I taste and feel. This immersive approach fuels my writing, bringing my stories to life.
While writing Lumpini Park, I even stayed in two of the hotels featured in the story to truly capture the essence of their atmosphere and surroundings. Writing on the move is an adventure in itself. The novel is rich in descriptive details, allowing readers to feel as though they are right there in Bangkok, experiencing the city as it was between 2009 and 2010—a time of rapid development and transformation.
